Stems: Woody or herbaceous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite, joined by a line across the stem. Margins entire. Stipules present or represented by a line joining opposite petioles.

Flowers: Flowers showy and actinomorphic with an equal number of sepals, petals, and stamens. Calyx with 4 or 5 lobes. Corolla of 4 or 5 petals; petals mostly fused and tubular. Stamens 4 or 5, adnate to the corolla lobes. Ovary superior or inferior, often with two carpels (sometimes 5).

Fruit: Capsules; berries; or drupes.
